What is OpenAthens and how do I use it to access Electronic Resources?
Answer
OpenAthens is a Single Sign-On (SSO) Federated Access tool that supports a managed proxy. In short, it authenticates a user's identity while providing secure and remote access to our digital resources. It is integrated with AWSOM's Single-Sign-On, allowing users to sign in via institutional credentials (school email).
To access digital journals, eBooks, or databases through the AWSOM Library, users may be prompted to login via OpenAthens. The process may be a little different for each resource, but they should all follow these basic steps:
1. On the login page for a resource, there will be an option to Log in via OpenAthens:

2. You will be asked to choose your Institution from a drop-down. If prompted to choose a Federation, click on OpenAthens Federation, then find our institution from the drop-down:

Note: A few select resources do not authenticate through OpenAthens and are therefore inaccessible off campus. These include:
- Elsevier Osmosis
- American Heart Association Journals
- American Urology Journals
- Journal of Nursing Education
- Molecular Biology of the Cell
- American Journal of Roentgenology
